Just a few days ago we celebrated the belated birthday of my husband who came over from afar to spend some time here in our home. We invited dear friends and transformed our living room into a welcoming space for more than ten guests with loads of delicious Brazilian food, good drinks, and flowers. I ordered two flower bouquets extra for the occasion.

November Days at Home

What has no beginning, no end, and fills us with infinite feelings of completeness? It may not be the first thought that comes to mind, but it's as simple as a circle. 

And many of us don't fill our homes with enough of them!

The emotional aspect of which shapes we fill our home with is often overlooked, but the proof is in the pudding when we look at our reactive responses. <a href="https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/why-do-we-find-circles-so-beautiful/" target="_blank">A study</a> conducted in 1921 by a Swedish Psychologist asked subjects to draw lines and shapes that represented their emotions. In an overwhelming majority of responses, angular lines showed negative emotions in people, and curved lines expressed loving feelings of comfort.

Perhaps we'd go as far to say that this bias may be due to a biological response from evolution, as we tend to associate circles with the cute and cuddly roundness of a baby's face, thus over-showering us with feelings of innocence and trust.

And with the recent craze of mid-century modern regaining its influence in the last decade within the design world, most of us have picked up a habit of implementing too many harsh straight lines and blocked shapes within our home, an area which is paramount to being warm and inviting. We've completely neglected the importance of forms in amongst all the 50s design crazes. If you feel that your interior leaves you with less warm, cozy, and cuddly feelings, you've probably fallen victim to this revived trend. That's okay; we're here to save you. 

You may be thinking, 'Great, but I've tried! Circles are so difficult to add to my home' Well, here are a few tips from us at DecorMatters to add more curves to your home to cozy it up!

What Hangs From the Ceiling, Hangs Onto Our Attention 

When we walk into a home, lighting is one of the first to grab our attention. Whether it be the warmth or intensity it radiates, or the light fixtures themselves, lights are a bold statement that can be leveraged in your new circulated venture.

And the good news is that there’s an abundance of unique, rounded lighting options in most lighting or interior decor stores, from simple fixtures to something a little more out there. 

Start by looking to implement hanging light fixtures that offer round shades or side table lamps that harness a round base. Opt for Circular Mirrors in Spaces With Harsh Lines by Default

Using mirrors to open up a space and reflect light is a well-known hack, but like anything hanging on our walls, circular mirrors are far easier to style to your home than other decorative objects.

In certain rooms in your home where there may be a lot of straight and harsh lines that you cannot control their presence (such as your bathroom), a rounded mirror can easily add that warmth.

What’s the Epitome of Cozy? A Rug, of Course!

The go-to in turning a cold, bland space into a cozier one is to add an inviting, maybe even shaggy, floor rug to your room. A rug can heat up any space in an instant.

And what’s better is that rounded rugs are easy to style. Opt for a round rug on your next trip to your favorite home interior store if you’re struggling to add circles to your living room through decor or lighting.

Speaking of shopping for more elements to add to our warm space, we don’t know about you, but we like to pop our feet up after a long day of shopping for our home, to really enjoy it. We Challenged Our Users to Decorate With Pink

Now and again I come across the (al)most perfect lamp. There might be one or two things that aren’t quite right – the color, the shade, the texture, etc. Whether that almost perfect lamp was at a thrift shop, was a donation from a friend or family member, or was found at a store, I used to see things as they were, not what they could be. Luckily, in the last few years, my mentality shifted; now, I have the confidence to bring new life to things. I recently brought two life two to (al)most perfect lamps that the “old” me would have turned down because they weren’t quite what I was looking for. But the “new” me made them into what I wanted. Lucky for you, the new me is about to share how I transformed both of these lamps so you can hopefully do the same one day!&nbsp;

It honestly would have been perfect in her room. What I didn’t want was to pay $200+ per lamp for a toddler’s room where there was a 90% chance these lamps would be broken (YIKES!). After a quick Google search, I found another bunny lamp from a Canadian company for $160 for two lamps – WIN. However, there were two problems: the bunnies were white not gold, and the lampshade was also white, not blue/grey. Good thing I’m a problem solver, right?!

I am relieved to say that I was really taking a chance on the rub-n-buff. This was my third time using it. The first two tries didn’t go so well. Luckily third time’s the charm, right?! Here’s what I learned from my rub-n-buff experiences:

I thought about painting the lampshade which would have worked. I didn’t because I know I would have missed the light that gets diffused out of the linen shade if I did. That being said, if I come across a perfect new shade, I will pick up two and fully have my Pottery Barn bunny lamp dupe.

She sent a group message to the whole family asking if anyone wanted this lamp. I immediately fell in love with its shape but was less in love with the shade pattern and color/texture of the lamp. Again, I was not letting this lamp pass me by, so I jumped at the opportunity before I even had a plan. When I got the lamp – it was better than I thought. It was not only the perfect shape, but it was also MASSIVE in the best way (see below).

I contemplated using a plaster-like I did for this DIY pedestal bowl I did – and in hindsight, it would have worked really well, but I wanted something a little more efficient (you must let the plaster dry for at least 24hrs). I decided to use the paint mixed with the baking soda method and loved how it ended up turning out. I did three coats – I probably could have gotten away with two but I wanted to keep adding some texture. My ratio was close to 1:1 baking soda to paint which I found gave the lamp the greatest texture. After I was satisfied with the paint/baking soda, I sanded down the lamp slightly. Wiped it clean, and then added a thin layer of white chalk paint to give it a more antique vibe than I was looking for.

With this one, I also took the chance and painted the lampshade! Originally, I found a drum shape but decided I preferred the empire so I went with painting it. I used chalk paint for this as well. I am impressed with how it turned out, but as I mentioned above, I miss that diffused light that peeks through.
