Lazy Time

Creating a fresh space works for both indoor and outdoor rooms. Whether that means adding more plants, using lighter colors, or creating an oasis with sounds, it can work for either setting. The word 'fresh' can have a different meaning depending on the designer, so we wanted to see all sorts of ideas and gain inspiration from this challenge.

I quickly realized how big of a mistake I had made! The chords were hanging down low and were within reach of her crib. There was no way that I could leave them like that.

She suggested an easy fix, which I appreciated: adding clips to the wall to wrap the cord around so it’s not dangling down. I thought this solution would be safe, but it would be such a pain to open and close the blinds multiple times each day.

We have four windows in Georgia’s nursery, including a dormer window in the ceiling that we can’t reach, so installing a motorized system for all windows so we could open and close them all simultaneously with the click of a button sounded brilliant! I love incorporating the “closing of the blinds” into Georgia’s nap time routine. It’s so nice that I can hold her while easily closing the blinds at the same time.

I wanted a clean, light look, so I decided to use the same white linen fabric in all of the bedrooms to seamlessly blend in with the existing drapes for a light and airy feel. In Taylor’s room, we added a fun pink stripe detail to the shade. The color works perfectly with the pink accents in her room and is subtle to tie her room decor together.

Taylor does the same thing in her bedroom which is really cute to watch. It’s such a nice way to start our day! I love it when technology makes our life easier.

The skylight in Georgia’s room is an arched window and a very tricky shape to cover. They came up with a custom solution for us that completely blocks out the light while maintaining the beautiful aesthetic of our dormer window when the blind is closed. Rich colors and fine details come from Victorian homes, and the style is just as much about architecture as decor. Wainscoting and crown molding are common features throughout these houses. 

A transitional design contains elements of modern and traditional styles, focusing on neutral walls with more standard furniture options.

I wanted our indoor and outdoor space to feel cohesive. It was important to me to have our patio on the same level as our main floor so you could walk right out. This was a little tricky to create as our lot had a slight incline, so what this meant is that our patio is slightly recessed, and we have a few stairs that take you to the grass area. I was a little concerned about this at first, but it gives you a nice tucked-in feeling, and there is a bit of a separation between the patio and grass area where the kids play.

Because we maximized our square footage with our house, we couldn’t incorporate a built-in patio cover because our bylaws wouldn’t allow it. Therefore, we have a couple of umbrellas on the patio, which we move around on sunny days. Not having a built-in cover on our back patio also means we get <a href="https://decormatters.com/blog/maximizing-natural-light-in-your-home">the maximum amount of sunlight</a> pouring into our home during the day, which makes me happy.

I love how it contrasts against the white-painted brick on our house. We did a light grey grout color so you can see the pattern in the stone. We have a brick pony wall around the patio and built-in planters on either side of the stairs that we fill with annuals. This year they were filled will Petunias (in particular Supertunias) that just thrived there! We worked with <a href="http://www.robspytz.com/robspytzdesign" target="_blank">Rob Spytz</a> on our patio and landscaping plan.

It’s constructed of marine-grade aluminum, so it’s highly durable in all climates. Ours is 11′ wide. Their outdoor kitchens are all fully customizable, making so much sense since everyone’s space and needs are different. We did cupboards to store our outdoor dinnerware and BBQ tools and built-in garbage and recycling bins. Our hardware is from Emtek, and our countertop is Vancouver Island marble from Matrix Marble &amp; Stone.

Hello lovely friends, I’ve missed you!

I took some time off from blogging to be able to enjoy time with family over the end of the summer and I’m finally getting back into a routine. Have you found it difficult to stick to a routine this year? I sure have! It seems like everything has been so out of whack…but I’m deciding in my heart to continue to do the things that help me with my routine…. daily devotions, exercise, planning what I can, taking deep breaths, and learning to not get stressed when my routine is interrupted!

We’ve all been spending more time at home and because of this, it’s easy to get discouraged about the spaces in our homes. This summer, I walked by my daughter’s bedroom (which hasn’t changed from when she moved several years ago!) and thought… "This room needs help!"

However, I had zero inspiration for this space, so I did nothing!

By the way…when you don’t know what to do about space, it’s okay to wait and do nothing until you get inspired. About 6 months later, a picture popped up on my IG feed and I knew that this is what I needed to do in this space!

Let me show you some before pics of this bedroom so that you can see my dilemma.

An Accent Wall Completely Changed the Look of This Bedroom

Green is a bold choice of color for some. It's most commonly used as an accent or a bold statement color. If you suggested to someone that they should add green into their space, plants would most likely be the initial response. We felt that green is a color that could be a challenge for most to use as a focal point so we decided to make that this week's challenge.
