After almost one and a half years in my Berlin apartment, the time has come for some changes. For quite a while there’s been a small but significant pain point in my living room. The seating options were limited, especially for gatherings and parties. Also, the layout of the sofa and lounge chair and stools was more or less ok. But I was not fully convinced all this time. Moreover, I dearly love my vintage leather sofa by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer – but it is not the comfiest place to binge-watch a Netflix series. And then <a href="https://vetsak.com/collections/sofa" target="_blank">vetsak</a> appeared in my life.

Vetsak is a German-South African furniture maker and their highlight product is their <a href="https://vetsak.com/collections/sofa" target="_blank">modular sofa system</a>. Almost endless possibilities of combinations, different materials, textures, and colors to choose from – however, it didn’t take me too long to find the perfect solution for my living room pain point. I had something pretty precise in my head and with Vetsak I turned this idea into reality. I’ve opted for a kind of lounge sofa made of two modules and two backrests in chunky yet soft corduroy in sand color.

With the arrival of the sofa, a few changes had to be made to free up the space. The advantage of modular sofas is that they come in boxes – so my sofa for example came in about six larger boxes and a few smaller ones. Quite handy! And the building up was pretty quick and efficient – with the help of three friends though.

I have cleared the corner next to the window in the living room as I wanted to create a cozy TV nook. The Vetsak sofa is now facing the TV and sitting right under the window to enjoy sky views while lying on the super cozy sofa. Additionally, I decided to place the vintage leather sofa opposite of the vetsak sofa – like this the room has a much more social vibe for gatherings as people can sit opposite of each other and chat, drink, and eat.

A few other bits and pieces had to be moved, and the large Philodendron Selloum got even a little lift to use more of the room’s height and create a green canopy over the vetsak sofa. I am so in love with the new design of the living room and can’t wait to host the next party – which will be my birthday bash in about two weeks. And then the vetsak sofa will not only be a great TV lounge, but also a perfect seating option for my guests. I will show you.

Modern interior design evolves with each decade and contains items that have risen in popularity within the past several years. Modern homes often fall under one of two categories: midcentury modern or contemporary. 

Midcentury modern homes have muted colors and shapes. They focus on a combination of natural and synthetic textures. 

Contemporary focuses on current trends and <a href="https://renovated.com/what-is-contemporary-design/">doesn’t have much texture</a>. Clean lines and a focus on sophistication are staples of the design.

This style includes historic and timeless pieces. Most often, <a href="https://www.housebeautiful.com/design-inspiration/a23611149/traditional-design/">it takes inspiration from</a> homes of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Symmetry and elegance are essential in traditional design, emphasizing harmony in each room. 

Rich colors and fine details come from Victorian homes, and the style is just as much about architecture as decor. Wainscoting and crown molding are common features throughout these houses. 

A transitional design contains elements of modern and traditional styles, focusing on neutral walls with more standard furniture options. 

Pops of color are common, with wood floors and furniture throughout the home. Texture is another essential element for this design style, adding dimension to walls and furniture. 

Rustic design evolved from the Romantic Movement and focuses on using natural materials with some industrial touches. 

These homes are all about simplicity and embracing the beauty nature offers. Main rooms throughout the home typically have focal points that ground each area, such as a mirror or fireplace. 

Maximalism is not the same thing as clutter. It's all about strategically layering colors and textures to create a bold, aesthetically pleasing home. 

These rooms often feel larger than life, with guests always finding something new to look at. However, they are not so overwhelming that you cannot hold a meaningful conversation in them. The floors remain clear in most maximalist designs. Walls and shelves serve as canvases to display photos, antiques and other decor items.

Practice makes perfect with maximalist design. Homeowners often use a color or theme that ties a room together, keeping it fun and not overwhelming.

While maximalism enjoys having more, minimalism is all about less. Minimalist rooms breathe easier than other designs. Simplicity with smart and practical features is key to implementing this design style. 

These homes are bright and clean, with a neutral color palette and simple designs. It's common for minimalist houses to have a pop of color here and there, but they're often not a major priority.

Minimalism could be a great interior design option for people who <a href="https://share.upmc.com/2021/02/clutter-and-stress/">get stressed with clutter</a> around.

If a home has good bones, why not show them? That is the philosophy of industrial design lovers.

The style originated <a href="https://www.jdinstitute.edu.in/industrial-interior-design-all-you-need-to-know/">during the Industrial Revolution</a> and took inspiration from factories' exposed brick and ductwork. Many modern industrial homes and apartments originated from these older buildings.

Metals, brick, wood and utilitarian decor complement the open spaces found in many industrial homes. This gives the house a large feel, with room to converse and create.

Think of eclecticism as a toned-down form of maximalism. The style focuses on carefully selecting items to create an interior rich in culture. 

Despite what some may think, there are limits to what you can do with eclectic design to keep it from overwhelming you and your guests. Many homes with this style feature a neutral palette with a few accent colors per room. 

Eclectic style has a balance of color, texture, and old and new items, making interesting and enjoyable spaces.

Naturalism has been around for centuries, though people from the past probably didn't realize it was interior design. Art deco can be hard to describe, but you often know it the instant you see it. The design originated in the 1920s and has distinctive features.

Shabby chic homes are meaningful but have a relaxed style overall.

If you suggested to someone that they should add green into their space, plants would most likely be the initial response. We felt that green is a color that could be a challenge for most to use as a focal point so we decided to make that this week's challenge.

Midnight isn't just a time of day, in the world of interior design, a midnight black calls for a cool, sleek and elegant space. Using a dark black as the main focus of the room, can be an incredibly difficult task, especially if you tend to lean towards lighter and brighter colors. Midnight covers colors like black, dark blues, and grey tones.
