Embracing Diversity: The Beauty of Eclectic Interior Design

I’m in the process of giving an old metal&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/small-target-shelving-unit-makeover/" target="_blank">Target shelving unit a makeover</a>. I’ve spray painted the base and now and now I’m ready to give the plywood a faux wood finish with prominent wood grain.

I’m no stranger to creating faux wood finishes. If you can think of a way to create one, I’ve probably already tried it. Previously I’ve given a smooth&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/painting-laminate-cabinets-and-laminate-furniture-tutorials/" target="_blank">laminate surface</a>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/weathered-wood-finish-smooth-surface/" target="_blank">faux wood (weathered wood) finish with paint and dark wax.</a>

You can also see where I learned to&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/how-to-create-the-weathered-barn-wood-look-with-new-wood/" target="_blank">highlight the wood grain with spackle</a>&nbsp;for a rustic wood finish. Yep, you heard me right- with spackle or otherwise known as joint compound.

Today I’m sharing how to create a faux wood finish with a graining tool. These tools are awesome and so easy to use IF you know how to use them. Let me show you.

How to use a wood graining tool for a faux wood paint finish

Using a graining tool doesn’t have to be hard. As a matter of fact, a beginner DIYer can do this!

First, you need to decide which medium you want to use.

You can use a graining tool with virtually any medium, including the stain. Know that stains typically won’t create as prominent of a grain effect unless you are using a stain that sits on the surface like a&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/wood-furniture-makeover-with-unicorn-spit-gel-stain/" target="_blank">gel stain</a>.

There is a product called&nbsp;<a href="https://repurposeandupcycle.com/how-to-use-retique-it-liquid-wood-with-a-folding-table-makeover/" target="_blank">Liquid Wood</a>&nbsp;that infuses small particles of real wood into a paint product. I’ve used this product with a graining tool on an old folding table. I finished it with a stain too. It worked beautifully.

I thought about using the&nbsp;<a href="https://amzn.to/3tZj99h" target="_blank">Retique It Liquid wood product</a>, but I decided to see what I could create with just paint.

Once you’ve decided on your medium, apply one to two layers on the surface.

Immediately after you apply the paint, start at one end of the surface and hold the rubber graining tool at about a 45-degree angle. Pull the graining tool through the paint (or stain) rocking it back and forth slowly until it reaches the edge of the surface.

Always pull the tool in the direction of the wood grain. If the surface you are applying it to doesn’t have a wood grain, decide the best direction for it. For most vertical surfaces, the wood grain should run vertical and vice versa for horizontal surfaces.

Make one smooth pass with the tool and DON’T pull the graining tool up until you’ve reached the edge.

If you mess up or you don’t like the grain, no big deal. Take your paint brush and brush over the surface and start over again.

Note; for a really cool effect, apply dark paint first and then a lighter paint on top. You will need to apply the lighter paint to the base coat while it’s still&nbsp;fairly&nbsp;wet. This is something you need to play around with to get the right timing for applying the second coat. The graining tool will pull the dark color out and it makes a really neat color.

What surfaces can you use a wood grain tool on?

As long as you have a paint or stain medium that will adhere to the surface you are trying to apply the wood grain to, any surface should work! You can apply this faux wood grain finish to virtually any type of material.

Like I said earlier, I applied this faux finish to a plastic folding table and it turned out beautifully.

Note: the thicker the paint or stain medium, the more prominent the wood grain will show.

Look how real that wood grain looks! The best part? It actually has texture and feels like wood grain too.

Thanks to<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5xf0cWE1Bc" target="_blank"> this youtube video</a>, I recently learned the difference between a miter cut and a bevel cut. If you don’t know the difference – I would suggest watching the video. It explains it really well. Effectively if you are joining molding in a corner, it will be a bevel cut. Country House style (with sustainability always at its heart) looks again to the East for decorating inspiration. On the blog radar too is an interesting juxtaposition between Pantone’s Metaverse-inspired color of the year versus Mother Nature’s slow decorating palette. Let’s start though by opening the door to the new ‘Garden Room’

The New Garden Room

The ‘reset’ that in 2021 saw 90,000 people leave London for the countryside was as much about a desire for the outdoors as well as for a more flexible living space. And the importance we now place on a connection to nature for our health also extends to the way we decorate our homes.

The new Garden Room (as mentioned previously in <a href="https://chariswhite.com/2021/09/24/autumn-winter-2021-interior-design-directions/#more-48603" target="_blank">Autumn/Winter 2021 Interior Design Directions</a>) is taking precedence alongside home offices, utility rooms, and home gyms. Unsurprisingly they are also being designed for chic hotel and restaurant renovations.

Garden Rooms take many forms from the more traditional idea of a room at the bottom of the garden to a chic architect- or custom-designed space to a bathroom, bedroom, or living space that has botanical forms at the heart of its design. A century or so ago plant hunters returning from intrepid overseas travels inspired the building of plant cathedrals by way of orangeries and conservatories.

Today’s new Garden Room is a little more egalitarian in that it can be created with a simple packet of seeds in the tightest of spaces. It might consist of an indoor theatre of plants with a few shelves. A console table with symmetry of table lamps and mirrors is also hugely effective. When budgets are small, it is amazing what can be achieved with decoupage, the use of painted trellis, wallpaper, or striking mural.

The Metaverse and Pantone’s Color of the Year

In contrast to decorating with nature, Pantone has announced their color of the year for 2022 as <a href="https://www.pantone.com/color-of-the-year-2022" target="_blank">Very Peri.</a> They describe it as having a combination of violet-red with undertones of blue and that it represents the transformation of the physical and digital world. The idea for this color emerged following lockdowns and isolations when the digital world and the rise of the <a href="https://www.quytech.com/blog/what-is-metaverse/" target="_blank">Metaverse</a> took a new place in our lives.

The color is a little synthetic to my taste and whilst the idea of the Metaverse might hold all sorts of possibilities, I feel a little reserved about what significance it might ultimately have.

Russian Style

<a href="https://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/faberge" target="_blank">The Faberge in London: Romance to Revolution exhibition at The V&amp;A Museum</a> (from now until 8 May 2022) is driving a renewed interest in Russian decorating. From the more rustic decoration folk art of countryside Dachas to the opulence of Russian palaces.

If like me you are a bit of a Russophile, you might like to look out for specialists in the field such as the very stylish <a href="https://www.alexandratolstoy.co.uk/" target="_blank">Alexandra Tolstoy</a>/<a href="https://thetolstoyedit.com/" target="_blank">The Tolstoy Edit</a>, Larissa Miladoravich of <a href="https://www.miloladesign.com/collections/wallpaper/products/russian-costumes-pea-green" target="_blank">Milola Designs</a> (as featured in my previous post on <a href="https://chariswhite.com/2021/11/19/russian-style/" target="_blank">Russian Style</a>), and <a href="https://volgalinen.com/" target="_blank">Volga Linen.</a><a href="https://www.manuelcanovas.com/" target="_blank">Manuel Canovas</a> at Colefax &amp; Fowler is launching ‘Anastasia’ a new Faberge egg-inspired fabric design in January 2022.

What I love about these designers is how richly they re-tell the stories of their Russian heritage for today’s design audience.

Chinoiserie style

Looking further East, another Country House style favorite is the use of Chinoiserie in an eclectic decorating scheme. 2022 sees more new highlights of this style from glinting glossy walls to lacquered furniture and accessories as well as new fabric and wallpaper designs.

Look out too for original pieces such as these gorgeous English Chinoiserie 1920s green splat back chairs, although now sold, they are from an ever-changing selection of pieces at <a href="https://www.theoscarcollective.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Oscar Collective</a>. No country house rules are required as Chinoiserie looks just as fabulous in contemporary settings too.

Marg Arg Style

Finally, in the recent and rather excellent <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0b569c3/a-very-british-scandal-series-1-episode-1" target="_blank">A Very British Scandal on BBC1</a>, you can understand why Margaret, the Duchess of Argyll fell in love with the fairy tale <a href="https://www.inveraray-castle.com/" target="_blank">‘Inverar(y)’ castle.</a> Certainly worth a visit, the castle sits in beautiful gardens with a magnificent view of Loch Fyne. There are some lovely rooms and as I remember it, the main hall has quite a display of war-like clan implements!

The blog is taking a look at some interior design trends for 2022. Country House style (with sustainability always at its heart) looks again to the East for decorating inspiration. On the blog radar too is an interesting juxtaposition between Pantone’s Metaverse-inspired color of the year versus Mother Nature’s slow decorating palette.

Interior Design in 2022

After almost one and a half years in my Berlin apartment, the time has come for some changes. For quite a while there’s been a small but significant pain point in my living room. The seating options were limited, especially for gatherings and parties. Also, the layout of the sofa and lounge chair and stools was more or less ok. But I was not fully convinced all this time. Moreover, I dearly love my vintage leather sofa by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer – but it is not the comfiest place to binge-watch a Netflix series. And then <a href="https://vetsak.com/collections/sofa" target="_blank">vetsak</a> appeared in my life.

Vetsak is a German-South African furniture maker and their highlight product is their <a href="https://vetsak.com/collections/sofa" target="_blank">modular sofa system</a>. Almost endless possibilities of combinations, different materials, textures, and colors to choose from – however, it didn’t take me too long to find the perfect solution for my living room pain point. I had something pretty precise in my head and with Vetsak I turned this idea into reality. I’ve opted for a kind of lounge sofa made of two modules and two backrests in chunky yet soft corduroy in sand color.

With the arrival of the sofa, a few changes had to be made to free up the space. The advantage of modular sofas is that they come in boxes – so my sofa for example came in about six larger boxes and a few smaller ones. Quite handy! And the building up was pretty quick and efficient – with the help of three friends though.

I have cleared the corner next to the window in the living room as I wanted to create a cozy TV nook. The Vetsak sofa is now facing the TV and sitting right under the window to enjoy sky views while lying on the super cozy sofa. Additionally, I decided to place the vintage leather sofa opposite of the vetsak sofa – like this the room has a much more social vibe for gatherings as people can sit opposite of each other and chat, drink, and eat.

A few other bits and pieces had to be moved, and the large Philodendron Selloum got even a little lift to use more of the room’s height and create a green canopy over the vetsak sofa. I am so in love with the new design of the living room and can’t wait to host the next party – which will be my birthday bash in about two weeks. And then the vetsak sofa will not only be a great TV lounge, but also a perfect seating option for my guests. I will show you.
