Modernism: 1900s to 1940s

If we took a quick trip back to the early 1900s, we’d be surrounded by living rooms that prioritized elegance in all its forms, clean lines, bold colors, and a clear sense of simplicity.

Modernism in interior design prioritizes organized and uncluttered spaces that are functional in every aspect and bring a feeling of clear headed-ness with a relaxing ambiance.

Modernism-up Your Living Space

Less is more - don’t crowd yourself with decorative elements.

As Modernism prioritizes a minimalistic and clean approach to a space, the fewer decorative elements you use, the better. Ensure the pieces you choose for your home are pieces you love. Invest more in a few good pieces rather than a lot of little ones you feel neutral about.

Celebrate materials in every form.

Do you have any concrete you may be able to expose in the dwelling of your home? Add Bold Art Deco Vibes

Go big with animal motifs.

Geometry was a vast go-to for this era, so to take it to the next level, one could use wallpaper with animal motifs in bold colors to stand out and bring the confident Art Deco feeling to the home. In today's world, leopard print walls speak glamour and luxury. If committing to an entire wall is too much for you, opt for some cushions that are covered in an animal print design.

If animal print is not your thing, we understand. It's a bold move, and even though we implore you to bring boldness to this style, we get it –- it's not for everyone. So instead, you can opt for working alongside the familiarity of geometry. Either search for geometric wallpaper online or at your local store or utilize geometric shapes in your furniture choice. You could add a geometric sideboard or a triangular mirror in your hallway. Don't be afraid to work with many different forms; you'd be surprised by what you can create.

Mid-Century Modern 1930s to present

The Mid-Century Modern design style has not left our side in almost a century. This makes it a pretty safe and timeless design choice when it comes to restyling your home, especially if your budget only gives you one shot to do so.

Bring back the wood.

Wooden mantlepieces, wicker cabinets, bamboo side tables, or rattan bedframes: Whatever stain, whatever color, find some wood, and bring it in! The Mid-Century Modern house used so much wood we wonder whether any trees were left in the forest. This era was all about warmth and class, creating a comfortable and cozy home that served as a place to entertain. This may be due to the height of mid-century modern peaking during World War 2 when most people needed a comfortable place to be amongst the chaos happening overseas.

3 Styles From The Last Century You Can Incorporate Into Your Home Today

If you had a time machine and traveled back to 1983, you might have heard the following thrown around at every public gathering you can think of: “What on earth is the internet?” 

To these folks living in the simple age, it was very new, very hard to understand, and the entire concept was deemed utterly hopeless by most when it came to what was in store for our future.

Honestly, we don’t blame them, considering two decades prior, The Jetsons were setting an example for our future based on a prediction of flying cars (only 40 more years until this happens, sit tight).

But just like the internet was a mystery in the eighties, the Metaverse is in a similar position today. Although the concept is still being developed, major tech companies like Facebook and Microsoft are throwing themselves into the Metaverse and vouching for the idea. 

Today, let’s touch on precisely what the Metaverse is and how we feel the interior design industry will thrive within new virtual worlds. 

Metaverse, which gets its strange name from a 1992 sci-fi novel “Snowcrash,” speculating the digital world in the future, is a communal 3D virtual space that allows people to live in unique and different environments through the use of digital identities commonly known as “Avatars.” 

This virtual world has already allowed gamers to socialize and play together from all corners of the earth. However, most haven’t considered the mass benefits it brings to the building and design industry.

The Metaverse allows mass collaboration for architects, real estate developers, and interior designers by enabling them to come together and showcase their spaces and ideas without physical borders keeping them apart. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will allow anybody from anywhere to visit environments similar to the real world through basic online simulations, without restrictions.

View the Metaverse as an enhanced, 3D version of the internet we use today. It should not be seen as a silly world with little characters running through it (that’s Minecraft) but more as a virtual world for those to come together to collaborate further. 

How Does This Relate to Interior Design? 

Well, since the Metaverse is still a concept idea in development, we cannot entirely know what will exist. But here’s what we think: 

The Metaverse Will Allow Those Within the Industry to Collaborate Without Borders

As we mentioned, this is the core motivation for most of the Metaverse. Although it may feel like technology is tearing us apart, we feel like this could bring a lot of us in the creative industries together.

Interior designers and architects can work with other professionals (or clients) to whom they would usually have to take a lengthy and expensive trip to be physically present in person.

Projects will be integrated into physical locations within the Metaverse, and designers and architects can visit each other’s space and provide feedback on projects in a much more immersive environment, all from the comfort of their home office. 

Work With Cryptocurrencies to Allow Easy International Payment Options 

As the Metaverse is built on Blockchain, the same technology that Cryptocurrency was built from the ground on, we hope to see Cryptocurrency payment options become available for clients who use interior designers or architects through the Metaverse to design their homes.

This will remove intermediaries, like banks or other financial tech companies, from business to client transactions, allowing a more seamless international bank transfer process. Not only will this save time waiting for transfers to clear, but providing access to cryptocurrency payment options will also cut out any international transaction fees that start to add up when sending money overseas. 

Change the Concept of In-Person Design Services

We feel that the Metaverse will be implemented in more physical architectural and interior design offices as the graphics and technology continue to improve throughout its development.

It is possible the concept of an in-person office may fade, as we see everything can be completed remotely, as most Americans are choosing a more remote way of life.

The home design process will become a much more affordable experience due to fewer in-person call-outs, totaling gas, or accommodation costs. 

We will expect to see faster response times during the collaboration of projects, as progress is reviewed timely and efficiently through one quick click.

All you need are a few easy things to do and cross off your list; ideally, you will make it through the season without severe problems at home.

It’s Not Too Early To Get Your Home Ready For Winter

With green everywhere and the flowers in full bloom, it makes me pause to appreciate nature and the beauty of what a landscape artist brings! It brought to mind some incredible pictures my talented client from Kansas shared with me when discussing his interior finishes.

Coming in with their talented designer, John Kidd, Reed and Stacy Dillon gathered around the conference table at Segreto many times before I asked what Reed did for a living. I think what prompted me to ask was Reed showing me the beautiful architectural elements he wanted to place in his gardens and his focused based discussions on how Segreto’s interior finishes would reflect the outside. He felt strongly they should be as one. When I learned he was a prominent Landscape Architect, I asked to see some of his work!!

Reed and Stacey are both so nice which makes you appreciate his work even more. Reed grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas where his grandfather was a serious gardener. Reed recalls: “Growing up, my grandfather owned an orchard and we’d go pick peaches and apples. One day, I was around ten years old, I remember picking onions all day. Ugh, that was some hard work. But, he was my first inspiration and role model for understanding the appreciating plants.”

Reed’s grandfather gave Reed a landscape architecture magazine while he was attending the University of Kansas. Farming and gardening was a well know concept, but the idea of landscape architecture???- a light bulb went off for him and he decided he could turn his passion into a career. Reed met his forever sweetheart Stacey while working towards his liberal arts degree, and together they moved to Philadelphia where he he received a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Reed and Stacey lived in Houston for many years and he was a partner at Ruckel-Dillon, a prestigious landscape firm who designed Houston darling, Joni Webb’s of Code de Texas gardens!!

After 15 years the couple decided to move back to Lawrence, Kansas with their two children to be closer to family. Wanting to depart from their more contemporary home in Houston, Reed and Stacey felt a French farmhouse would marry well with the soft rolling hills and mature trees of the property they purchased.

The use of natural trees to build arbors which feel as if they are organically growing from the earth, create a secret garden feel to his landscapes. An element I adore.

When I lived in Georgia we had daffodils filling the greenspaces surrounding our home. It brought back so many fond memories of my childhood when I saw Reed’s picture of the gentle hills beyond his back terrace! He planted loads of daffodil bulbs!
